Horrific smell from spruit in Morningside
MORNINGSIDE - Concerned Morningside resident, Beryl Pugsley cannot stand the awful smell coming from the spruit that runs through Outspan Park in Marikana Crescent.

She explained, “For the past four months there has been a horrific smell coming from this waterway. Even after so many months, nothing has been done about it. Not only is the pungent smell disgusting, the stinking water is a health hazard.”
Pugsley added that when there was a downpour, the water flooded into Outspan Park, leaving garbage in the park which made it a health hazard for children to play in the area. She said other affected community members had reported the matter to Joburg Water. “The stench this evening after a hot day is terrible,” added Pugsley.
Puleng Mopeli of Joburg Water said since the water was coming from a storm water drainage system, the issue would have to be attended to by the Johannesburg Roads Agency.
Joburg Water said the smell was coming from the stagnant water in the small dams which was caused by blockages. Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson for the roads agency said a team had cleared the blockage, and had followed up with City Parks to remove a fallen tree and to cut the vegetation blocking the outlets.
