Some filling stations are experiencing fuel shortages

JOBURG - Motorists are allegedly being turned away from some fuel stations in northern Johannesburg due to a fuel shortage limited to particular fuel brands.

Zeena Rossouw said she was turned away from three service stations around the Fourways and Northgate areas as they were without petrol.

“The attendants said there was no petrol and that there is a shortage everywhere,” she said.

Avhapfani Tshifularo, executive director of the South African Petroleum Industry Association, said the association was not aware of a fuel shortage.

However, after consulting with the association’s members, Tshifularo said the shortage was not an industry-wide issue and advised motorists who have been turned away at services stations which stock a particular brand to try another brand.

Meanwhile, the owner of a service station in northern Johannesburg confirmed that he had been hit by the fuel shortage which was significantly impeding his business.

“The shortage is ongoing and we have been experiencing this for at least two months now, especially with 95 ULP, diesel 50ppm and diesel 10ppm which are in short supply,” said the owner, who asked to remain anonymous.

According to him, service stations are being rationed by being supplied with less than they had ordered.

“It’s a nightmare. For example, you order 40 000 litres but will only be supplied with 20 000 litres and then 10 000,” he said.

He added that he was not sure of the reason behind the shortage.
