Sandton actor in Beauty and the Beast production
JOBURG - Evan Williams, a Morningside resident, stars in a Disney’s Beauty and the Beast production showing at the Peoples Theatre in Johannesburg.

The musical direction by Rowen Bakker tells the story of an enchantress who turns a cruel, unfeeling prince into a hideous beast. To break the spell, the beast must learn to love another and earn her love in return before the last petal falls from an enchanted rose.
Evans plays the part of Cogsworth, the prince’s butler who is turned into a clock. He said his biggest challenge was playing the role of an old man when he is only 20 years old. “I basically struggled in the beginning, but got more comfortable with the role,” explained Williams.
He received sound advice from a performing arts lecturer which helped him prepare for the role of Cogsworth in the play. “I have the directors to thank because they really took a chance with letting me play this role of a much older man,” said Williams. He is grateful that his directors were firm with him and he believes that this is what prepared him for the role. “I’m sure this will work in my favour for my future in the industry,” added Williams. “When I leave this show, I feel I will be better.”
He has been in the field of performing arts for two and a half years and when he is not on the stage, he is out on the field playing sports. Williams draws inspiration from his musical theatre and performance teacher, Gemma Donnelly. “She always pushed me to be better,” said Williams.
The play promises to be the perfect family, fun show. It will be showing at the theatre until 24 December.
