Make a powerful first impression in 60 seconds

ILLOVO - Fine Women Business Network invited women from various business sectors to attend a networking breakfast in Illovo.

The session was aimed at empowering women and giving them the necessary skills to make an impactful first impression with anyone they meet.

“By participating in our breakfast network meetings you are making an investment in your business, you will meet new contacts and develop new relationships and synergies with fellow networkers,” said Taryn Laing, the founder of Fine Women Business Network.

Shelley Walters, an executive speech coach and international speaker was the guest speaker and she shared her knowledge of the essential elements needed to create and deliver a powerful elevator pitch. Walters also shared some tips on how women could leave a meaningful impression in 60 seconds with whomever they come in contact with.

“To leave a good first impression, you need to master the art of public speaking,” she explained. “Take the focus off yourself and focus on your audience and what it is you need to deliver to them. A presentation is like a conversation.”

Walters further introduced guests to various exercises they could perform in preparation for business meetings or presentations. “Nothing beats preparation,” she said. “That is how you build your confidence, by being prepared.”

She added, “Own your skill. Don’t be afraid of coming across as boastful. If you are good at what you do, own it. Qualifications don’t put you above anyone else. It puts you in the same league as everyone else in that industry.”
