Project promotes indigenous languages

SANDTON - Auditions for a comedy promoting South Africa’s indigenous languages will be held in Sandton on 7 and 8 November.

The Chief of Sandton is a television comedy written by playwright Famous Gamede that is based on historical events.

“King Mzilikazi Ka Khumalo was the last African king to rule over Gauteng in 1836,” explained Gamede.

“He had a royal kraal built in Sandton and other military kraals around the area. Now his great-great-grand son, Chief Buyela has successfully claimed his forefathers’ land (Sandton) from the Land Claim Court and has returned to rule over it.”

Gamede said in the story, according to tradition, the king must marry a new wife who must be a local virgin girl. “That means his loyal headmen Ngisi, a white man and Butha must start looking for that virgin girl for the king.”

Gamede said anyone and everyone was welcome to join the auditions. “We are also looking for sponsors to help us raise funds for the production,” he added. “This is a great initiative that aims to promote South African indigenous languages and will create jobs for many.”
