Gated communities are ‘not democratic’

Lovette Powell writes:

I read your article, Gate security should matter, week ending 17 October, and it simply underlined the undemocratic and selfish attitudes of people living in gated areas.

With the increasing density of residential areas and therefore increase in traffic, it is simply stupid to go on closing off needed roads which could relieve the congestion. We all pay for these roads and how is it decided who has the right to close off their road?

Crime exists everywhere and because someone has managed to close off their area it does not mean that the problem has disappeared. I’ve noticed that signs on the gates advertise the hours of when they would be open, but do not comply.

Either all roads can be closed, or none. It is not democratic.
