Raising awareness on World Mental Health Day

HURLINGAHM - Tara Hospital in Hurlingham hosted a World Mental Health Day programme on 10 October to change the way people perceive mental illness.

Various speakers in the medical field were invited to give educational talks about mental disability.

The internationally recognised day aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and bring attention to efforts in support of mental health.

The entire theme for this year’s programme at the hospital was focused on living with schizophrenia.

“We need to postpone our needs in order to provide comfort,” explained psychologist Nardus Saayman. “It is not the grasping, but the quality of trying to understand.”

Saayman discussed the challenges faced by people who suffer from schizophrenia. He said, “They lose the ability to be a part of civilisation and the condition has damaging effects.”
