Barman fights prostate cancer

SANDTON - The Sandton Sports Club is running a fundraising initiative to help their barman, Max Masingi, fight prostate cancer.

Masingi has already received a cheque worth R18 230 from the sports club, India Cares Foundation and the Nedbank Running Club (Central Gauteng) to put towards his cancer treatment.

Mokati Ramphele, the chairman of the club, said people have contributed generously towards the cause. “We are appealing to the community for donations towards Max’s treatment,” he added. “We don’t know how long the treatment will go on for or how much it will cost. It all depends on the severity of the cancer.”

The club has set aside an account for Masingi and the funds raised for him will go directly towards his medical costs. Masingi has already started with treatment at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.

Masingi is 62 years old and was diagnosed with prostate cancer in June this year. “As soon as you turn 40, go get a check-up for prostate cancer,” said Masingi. He added that one of his symptoms was the frequent need to urinate and he experienced pain in his leg.

“Prostate cancer can affect anyone,” added Masingi. He said he does not drink or smoke. Masingi has played league bowls and entered the club championships.

Ashley Francis, the club’s secretary, said, “Many, many people have got to know Max over the years. His friendly demeanour and sharp sense of humour have endeared him to many.”

Masingi is father to three boys and two girls who are now concerned about the state of his health and whether he will be able to beat the cancer.
