Car insurance donates to William Nicol pointsmen

SANDTON - Car insurance company, Auto and General made a generous donation to the traffic pointsmen on William Nicol Drive.

The pointsmen, often seen guiding traffic when the traffic lights are out, received the donation which included clothing and equipment.

According to Tom Creamer of the company, they decided to show their gratitude to the traffic controllers who often worked in difficult conditions.

“These pointsmen often have to ensure rather harsh conditions and we wanted to do something for them to show our appreciation for their efforts,” he said.

Among the items donated were overalls, high visibility waist coats, trade jackets, high visibility caps and rain suits, waterproof jackets, safety boots, patrol torches and battery operated head lamps.

Altus Venables, public relations officer at I Heart PR added that the pointsmen often did a thankless job and were hardly acknowledged for their efforts.

“Some motorists wave to them in appreciation but most will drive-by without even acknowledgement. It’s a thankless job and yet every day, come rain or shine, they are there,” he said.

He also encouraged the public to appreciate the effort put in by these men on a regular basis.

The donation made was valued at R60 000.
