Stabbing suspect awaiting medical examination

BRYANSTON - The man accused of stabbing his wife 50 times at a Bryanston office park, Yengesen Pillay, appeared in Randburg Magistrate's Court on 28 August and the case was postponed to 30 September.

The court has argued Pillay should undergo a 30-day medical examination at the Sterkfontein Hospital. Randburg Magistrate’s Court prosecutor Yusuf Baba said they were awaiting an empty bed at the hospital. The starting date of his medical examination will be re-visited on 30 September.

Baba said the 30-day examination would only begin when Pillay was admitted to the hospital. Until then, Pillay will be held at the medical facility of the Johannesburg Prison.

28 August, 9.30am:

Following a request from Senior Public Prosecutor, Yusuf Baba, at Randburg Magistrates’ court on 21 August to have the suspect undergo psychiatric evaluation, the court approved the application and the 42-year-old suspect was placed in the medical section of the Johannesburg prison.

The suspect will appear on 28 August for the court to finalise arrangements for him to undergo 30-day examination the medical section of the Johannesburg prison to determine his ability to stand trial. This is in terms of the Mental Health Act sections 77 and 78.

The suspect was unable to appear in court on 20 August where Baba said the suspect had attempted to commit suicide and was sent to hospital to receive treatment.

Police spokesperson, Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng, said the suspect was arrested by police on 19 August in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, following the murder of a woman, identified by the police as Shareen Pillay, and believed to be the suspect’s wife.

He added, “The suspect was on the run following the murder of a woman on [16 August] on the corner of Peter Place and Karen Street in Bryanston.”
The woman was found in the grounds of a Bryanston office complex. A security guard at the complex said the suspect worked there and alleged the suspect killed the woman inside the office building before leaving her body outside. This was, however, unconfirmed by police. Pillay had about 50 stab wounds.

A motorist saw her body and alerted paramedics to the incident. ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaark, said Pillay was barely responsive when paramedics arrived at the scene. He said she later died at Mediclinic Sandton after substantial blood loss.
