Update: ‘Awful sewage stench’ fills the air in Wendywood

WENDYWOOD - The stench of sewage in Wendywood Extension 4 is still bothering residents.

Wayne Gordon is still affected by the stink of sewage along St Francis Drive.

Gordon is convinced that the smell originates from a river that runs parallel to St Francis Drive. “My neighbours and I are particularly concerned about the health risks as a result,” explained Gordon.

He believes that there is a leak somewhere in the sewer nearby his place of residence.

Gordon said when Joburg Water attended to the problem, he was notified that a sewer blind was exposed and needed to be replaced.

Millicent Kabwe, spokesperson for Joburg Water said, “We have inspected the area and found no sewer leak.  The concrete slab has been moved back onto the open sewer blind and we’ve sealed the sides with cement. This was the only source that we could link to the reported smell.”

Gordon said, “Despite the closing of the sewer blind, the smell is still here. There must therefore be a sewage leak somewhere there.”

He added, “I am sitting inside the house, with all the windows and doors shut due to the strong smell of sewage outside, and somehow, the smell still comes inside. I stuck my nose outside to make sure that it was from outside, and immediately had to shut the window due to the strong smell.”
